Signs a Brake Caliper Is Sticking

A sticking caliper does not announce itself — it shows up as one hot wheel, a pull under braking, one pad worn out while the other is thick, or a smell after a long drive. All four point at the same two parts: the slide pins and the piston.

Four symptoms of a sticking brake caliper, a pad-wear diagnostic table, the hose-versus-caliper test, and four maintenance steps for every pad change

Four numbered symptom cards for a sticking brake caliper: hot wheel (too hot to hold after 20 minutes of gentle driving), pulls one way under braking (away from the weak side), uneven pad wear (one pad thin, the other still thick), and smell after a long drive (boiling brake fluid, cooked wheel bearing grease). A table decodes the pad-wear pattern: inner pad thin with outer thick means the slide pins are seized (the piston still works but the caliper body cannot pull the outer pad in); both pads worn with only one wheel hot means the piston is sticking; outer thin with inner thick is unusual and usually means the caliper body is binding on its carrier. A highlighted red box gives the test that avoids selling the wrong part: with the wheel still hot, crack the bleed nipple on that caliper — if fluid spurts out under pressure and the wheel immediately turns free, the caliper is fine and the fault is a collapsed hose acting as a one-way valve, or a master cylinder not returning; if nothing spurts and the wheel stays tight, the fault is in the caliper itself, a seized piston or seized slide pins. Below, four steps to do at every pad change, taking about ten minutes and preventing most caliper failures: pull both slide pins and clean them; inspect the rubber bushes and regrease with silicone brake grease, never copper or ordinary grease which swells the rubber; check both dust boots; and clean the carrier where the pads sit. A closing note covers bleeding: nipple at the highest point, furthest wheel from the master cylinder first, and an ABS modulator that has taken in air may need a scan tool to cycle the pump.

Inner pad thin and outer pad thick means the slide pins are seized — the piston still works but the caliper body cannot move to pull the outer pad on. Both pads worn but one wheel hot means the piston is sticking. Outer thin and inner thick is unusual and usually means the caliper body is binding on its carrier.

Jack the wheel, spin it by hand and feel the drag, then compare with the other side. Pump the pedal once and spin again — a healthy caliper releases and the wheel turns with only light contact. Then pull each slide pin out: it should slide with light thumb pressure and come out clean and greased.

Why does the wheel get hot?

Because a dragging pad is doing braking work all the time. A wheel that is too hot to hold after 20 minutes of gentle driving is dragging, and the heat destroys the pads, blues the disc, cooks the wheel bearing grease and boils the brake fluid in that caliper. It gets worse with every kilometre.

Why does the vehicle pull under braking?

Because one caliper is applying less force than the other — a sticking piston on one side, a collapsed hose acting as a one-way valve, or contaminated pads. The vehicle pulls away from the weak side. Check both wheel temperatures after a drive: the dragging one is hot, and the weak one is cold.

Can a sticking brake be the hose rather than the caliper?

Yes, and this is the one test that stops you selling the wrong part. A brake hose that has collapsed internally acts as a one-way valve: it passes pressure out to the caliper but will not let it back, so the wheel keeps dragging and heating after the pedal is released. With the wheel still hot, crack the bleed nipple on that caliper. If fluid spurts out under pressure and the wheel immediately turns free, the caliper is not at fault — the trapped pressure came from the hose, or from a master cylinder that is not returning. If nothing spurts and the wheel is still tight, the fault is in the caliper: a seized piston or seized slide pins. Do the test before quoting, because a hose costs a fraction of a caliper.
