When is a pin kit enough?

When the pads have worn unevenly — inner thin, outer thick — the piston still retracts, and the bore is clean. That is a seized slide pin, and a pin kit with new rubber bushes and the correct high-temperature silicone grease fixes it for a fraction of a caliper. It is the most common caliper fault there is.

How is a piston pushed back for new pads?

On a front caliper, straight back with a piston tool or a G-clamp, slowly, with the reservoir cap off so the fluid can rise. On most rear calipers with an integrated handbrake the piston must be screwed back clockwise with a wind-back tool — forcing it straight back destroys the handbrake mechanism inside.
