Signs a Brake Disc Must Be Replaced

A disc tells you its condition by feel and by measurement. A lip you can catch a fingernail on, a score you can feel, a blue tint, a hairline crack, or a micrometer reading at the minimum — each means something different, and only one of them is urgent enough to stop the vehicle.

Brake disc face diagram showing wear lip, 8 measurement points, crack, and blue tint zones

A brake disc face viewed from the front, showing where to check condition. The disc has a central hub with bolt holes, a worn face, and an outer rim. Eight small dots around the disc mark where thickness should be measured with a micrometer. A shaded blue wedge on the right represents a blued (overheated) patch of iron. A jagged red crack line runs from the outer rim inward on the left. Four numbered callouts lead to a five-row key below: (1) Wear lip — a rim edge catchable by fingernail usually means 1 mm or more worn per face; measure rather than guess. (2) Thickness at 8 points — a variation of more than about 0.015 mm measured around the disc is enough to feel as a pulsing brake pedal, usually from pad material transferred unevenly or a disc bolted onto a dirty hub. (3) Crack running from the outer edge inward, or one you can feel with a fingernail — this can grow and break the disc apart, and is a do-not-drive finding, unlike ordinary fine surface crazing. (4) Blue tint — the iron has been past about 600 degrees Celsius from riding the brakes, a seized caliper, or a dragging handbrake; find the cause before fitting a new disc or the replacement will blue the same way. (5) Surface crazing — fine crazing spread evenly across the whole face is normal heat checking on an older disc and is not urgent, unlike a directional crack. A disc should also always be replaced in axle pairs, and a scored or grinding disc (steel backing plate cutting into it) is almost always scrap.

What does the wear lip tell you?

Run a fingernail over the outer edge of the disc. The unswept rim stands proud of the worn face, and the height of that lip is roughly how much has worn off one side. A lip you can clearly catch usually means 1 mm or more per face, so the disc is close to or past its minimum. Measure it rather than guess.

What causes a pulsing brake pedal?

Uneven disc thickness, usually from pad material transferred in patches or a disc bolted onto a dirty hub. The pulse appears under light braking from speed and gets worse as the disc heats. Measure thickness at eight points around the disc — a variation over about 0.015 mm is enough to feel through the pedal.

What does a blue disc mean?

The disc has been past about 600 degrees — from riding the brakes, a seized caliper or a dragging handbrake. Blued iron is hardened in patches and will never brake evenly again. Fine surface crazing across the friction face is normal heat checking on an older disc. A crack that runs from the outer edge inward, or one you can feel with a fingernail, can grow across the disc and break it apart. That is a do-not-drive finding, not a quotation for next week.

Ten to fifteen moderate stops from about 60 km/h down to 20, with a short cool-down between each, then drive gently for the next hundred kilometres. Do not come to a complete stop and hold the pedal while the discs are hot — that is exactly how the pad material transfers in patches and creates a pulse.

Does a grinding noise always mean the disc?

A metallic grinding that changes with wheel speed and gets worse when braking means the pad friction material is gone and the steel backing plate is cutting the disc. By then the disc is almost always scrap. A squeal without grinding is usually a wear indicator or a missing shim, and the disc may still be fine.

Can a disc be kept if only one face is scored?

No. The two faces are clamped by the same caliper, so a scored outer face and a clean inner face still give uneven clamping and the pad on the good side wears at an angle. Discs are also always replaced in axle pairs — one new disc beside a worn one gives different friction left and right, which pulls under braking.
