Five measurements decide whether a disc fits, and one more decides whether the old one can stay. Diameter, thickness, height, centre bore and stud pattern identify the part; the minimum thickness cast into the disc decides its life. All six can be taken with a caliper in about three minutes.

What diameters and thicknesses are common?

Front discs run 236, 255, 260, 276, 280, 295, 300 and 320 mm across, at 20 to 32 mm thick when vented. Rear discs run 240 to 300 mm at 8 to 12 mm solid, or 18 to 22 mm if vented. Measure the outside diameter of the friction face, not the outer edge of the casting.

Where is the minimum thickness figure?

Cast or stamped on the outer edge of the disc, usually as MIN TH followed by a figure — commonly 2 to 3 mm below the new thickness, so a new 26 mm disc often reads MIN TH 24.0. Measure with a micrometer about 10 mm in from the outer edge, at four points around the disc, and use the smallest reading.

Why does a caliper not work for thickness?

Because the disc wears a lip at the outer edge that a caliper jaw rests on, so it reads the unworn thickness and hides the wear. A micrometer with a pointed or ball anvil reaches into the swept area. If only a caliper is available, grind two small pads onto its jaws or measure inside the wear ridge.

What are height, centre bore and stud pattern?

Height is the distance from the mounting face to the friction face — the offset, commonly 34 to 70 mm; get it wrong and the disc will not clear the caliper. Centre bore is the hole over the hub, typically 54 to 78 mm. Stud pattern is the count and pitch circle, commonly 4x100, 5x114.3 or 6x139.7.

Can a disc be skimmed instead of replaced?

Only if the finished thickness will still be above the minimum with room for the next set of pads — and on a disc that starts at 26 mm with a 24 mm minimum there is rarely room. Skimming also removes the hardened surface and the disc wears faster afterwards. On Myanmar prices a new disc is usually the better value.

Can a larger disc be fitted as an upgrade?

Not on its own. A larger diameter moves the pad further from the hub and needs a caliper carrier made for it, and it changes the front-to-rear brake balance the vehicle was designed around. Fitting a bigger front disc without matching the rear can lock the fronts early in the wet. Fit the specification.
