Discs are bought in pairs, by axle, and the same model can carry two different sizes depending on the engine and the brake package. A 1.5 petrol and a 2.0 diesel of the same body often take 260 mm and 296 mm discs. Must discs and pads be replaced together?

New pads on an old grooved disc bed in to the grooves and lose contact area, and they wear fast and squeal. New discs with old pads transfer the old pad deposits straight onto the new surface. Clean the hub face back to bare metal. A disc bolted onto rust flakes sits at an angle and gives run-out and a pulsing pedal from day one — this is the most common cause of a brand new disc that judders. The difference is the iron. A good disc uses a high-carbon grade that handles heat and resists cracking; a cheap one can crack or develop hot spots within months. Always, in size, type and brand. Different friction surfaces on the same axle give different braking force left and right, and the vehicle pulls under hard braking exactly when that matters most. What if the vehicle has had a brake upgrade?

Then the OE number for the model will be wrong. A bigger caliper or a disc from a higher trim changes diameter, thickness and sometimes the centre bore, and the standard listing will not fit.
