A brake caliper is a hydraulic clamp. Fluid at 80 to 140 bar pushes a piston, the piston pushes the inner pad onto the disc, and the reaction slides the whole caliper so the outer pad is pulled on too. Almost everything that goes wrong with a caliper is a seized slide pin or a corroded piston, not a dead caliper.
Diagram: the two caliper layouts and the seal that makes both work. In a sliding caliper a single piston pushes the inner pad, then the whole caliper slides on its pins and pulls the outer pad in — which is why seized slide pins show up as one pad worn and one barely touched. In a fixed caliper, pistons on both sides push together: nothing slides and there are no pins to seize, but there are more seals and more places to leak. The panel below shows the part most people miss: the square-section piston seal is the return spring. Pressure deflects it, and when you release the pedal the seal springs back and pulls the piston with it. That is why a dragging brake is usually not the piston itself but a hardened seal, seized pins, or a collapsed hose trapping pressure — and why cracking the bleed nipple tells you which.
What is a sliding caliper and how does it work?
A single-piston caliper with the piston on the inboard side only. When the piston pushes the inner pad on, Newton third law slides the caliper body the other way on two greased pins, pulling the outer pad against the disc. It only works if both pins slide freely — which is why a seized pin wears the inner pad and leaves the outer one thick.
What is a fixed caliper?
အသေ caliper ဆိုတာ ဘာလဲ
A caliper bolted rigidly to the knuckle with pistons on both sides — two, four, six or eight. It clamps more evenly and is stiffer, but it costs more and has twice the seals. Fixed calipers appear on heavier and performance vehicles; sliding calipers are on almost everything else at Win Store.
How does a caliper piston retract?
The square-section piston seal twists as the piston moves out and springs back when pressure drops, pulling the piston back about 0.1 to 0.2 mm. That tiny retraction is the only thing that stops the pads dragging. A hardened or swollen seal cannot spring back, and the wheel runs hot even with a healthy hose.
Why does a caliper need a dust boot?
The boot keeps water and grit off the polished piston surface. Once it splits, the exposed steel corrodes, the rust ridge tears the seal on the next stroke, and the piston seizes. In Myanmar monsoon conditions a split boot goes to a seized piston in a single wet season — checking the boots is a two-minute job at every pad change.
What torques hold a caliper on?
Carrier bracket bolts to the knuckle are commonly 80 to 130 Nm and are often single-use stretch bolts. Slide pin bolts are 25 to 40 Nm. The banjo bolt for the hose is 25 to 40 Nm with a new copper washer each side. Look the figures up — a carrier bolt under-torqued on a front brake is a safety failure.
How much force does a caliper apply?
A 54 mm piston at 100 bar produces about 23,000 newtons — over two tonnes of clamp on one pad. That is why a caliper carrier bolt is torqued to 80 to 130 Nm and why a seized piston can hold a wheel dragging hard enough to boil the fluid in minutes.
Why are some caliper pistons plastic instead of steel?
Those are phenolic pistons — moulded resin, most common on Japanese and Korean vehicles — and they are fitted on purpose. Resin carries far less heat from the pad into the brake fluid than steel does, so the fluid is slower to boil on a long descent. They need different handling: never grip one with pliers, never press a winding tool's metal pins straight against the face without the correct adaptor, and never sand or wire-brush the surface, because the sealing face is only as good as the moulding. A phenolic piston that is chipped or swollen at the boot groove is replaced, not cleaned up, and it must be replaced with phenolic — a steel piston in that caliper will put more heat into the fluid than the system was designed for.
