A brake drum is a wear part with a hard limit stamped on it. Every time the shoes wear the drum wears too, growing in diameter, and once it passes the maximum diameter the metal left is too thin to take the heat and can crack. The figure is cast into the drum and is not a suggestion.

What diameters are common?

Small cars run 180, 200 and 203.2 mm (8 inch); mid-size cars and vans 228.6 (9 inch), 254 (10 inch) and 279.4 (11 inch); pickups and light trucks 295, 320 and 350 mm. Measure the inside diameter of the friction surface with a drum gauge or inside calipers, not the outside of the drum.

What is the maximum diameter figure?

Cast or stamped on the drum face or the outer rim, usually as MAX or MAX DIA followed by a figure — typically 1.0 to 1.5 mm above nominal, so a 254 mm drum often reads MAX 255.5. A drum measuring at or past that figure is replaced, not machined.

How do you measure a drum properly?

Take three readings across the friction band — at the open edge, at the middle and at the closed end — and rotate the drum between each. The largest reading is the one that counts. Differences between the three show taper or a wear step, which causes judder even if the maximum is not reached.

Can a drum be skimmed on a lathe?

Only if the finished diameter stays below the maximum with a margin left for future wear, and only if both drums on the axle are cut to the same size. Skimming removes metal that carries heat, so a drum cut to 0.2 mm under the limit will fade sooner than a new one. Where a new drum is affordable it is the better answer.

What else must match besides diameter?

The stud hole count and pitch circle diameter — commonly 4x100, 5x114.3, 6x139.7 — the centre bore, the overall depth of the friction band, and whether the drum carries wheel bearings inside it or slides over a hub. A drum that matches on diameter and nothing else will not go on the vehicle.

How much do shoes wear compared with the drum?

Far more. Linings start around 5 to 6 mm above the rivets or the shoe platform and are finished at about 1.5 mm, so a set of shoes wears several millimetres while the drum grows perhaps 0.5 mm. Expect two or three sets of shoes per drum, and measure the drum at every shoe change.
