Hydraulic brake faults are the ones customers describe as "the pedal feels wrong". A sinking pedal, a long pedal, a pull to one side or a wheel that stays hot all point at different parts, and the tests that separate them take minutes and cost nothing.

What does a slowly sinking pedal mean?

Hold firm steady pressure on the pedal at a standstill for thirty seconds. If it sinks slowly with no fluid visible anywhere outside, the master cylinder seals are passing internally. How do you check a wheel cylinder without stripping it?

Peel back the rubber dust boot at each end with a small screwdriver. Any fluid behind the boot means the seal is passing and the cylinder is finished, even if nothing has reached the shoes yet. A wet boot on a drum brake also contaminates the linings, so shoes and cylinder go together.

What causes a long pedal that pumps up?

What does contaminated brake fluid look like?

Dark brown or black instead of clear straw, sometimes with a jelly-like sludge in the reservoir. Black fluid usually means rubber seals are breaking down somewhere in the system. Why does one wheel stay hot?

A seized wheel cylinder piston, a collapsed brake hose acting as a one-way valve, or a seized handbrake cable. Open the bleed nipple on that wheel: if fluid spurts and the brake releases, the hose is at fault; if nothing changes, the cylinder or the shoes are seized.

How urgent is a sinking pedal?

It is a do-not-drive finding. A master cylinder passing internally is already partly failed, and the failure is progressive — the pedal that sinks slowly today reaches the floor next week, usually during the hardest stop the driver has had to make. There is no safe distance to drive on it.
