Brake hydraulic parts are one of the few places where a vehicle can carry two completely different components under the same model name, because the bore is chosen by the brake package rather than the body. A pickup with rear drums and one with rear discs use different masters, and the chassis number is the only reliable guide.

How do you tell a left wheel cylinder from a right?

Hold it as it sits on the backplate. The bleed nipple must point upward and the inlet port must line up with the pipe coming from the body. A master cylinder from a vehicle with a different brake layout, even if it bolts on. A disc-rear master fitted to a drum-rear vehicle has no residual pressure valve, so the shoes retract too far and the pedal goes long. Check the layout, not just the mounting.
