A brake hose gives very little warning before it fails, and the failure modes are dangerous in different ways — a burst loses the pedal entirely, a swollen hose lengthens the stopping distance, and a collapsed one drags a wheel until the brake overheats. All three are found by a two-minute inspection that costs nothing.

What does the visual inspection look for?

Cracks in the outer cover deep enough to show the braid, chafe marks or a flat spot where the hose has rubbed a suspension part, bulges under pedal pressure, dampness or a wet film at either fitting, and corrosion at the crimped ferrule. Any one of those condemns the hose.

What is the twist test?

Grip the hose and twist it gently between finger and thumb. A sound hose resists and springs back; a perished one twists easily and shows fine cracks opening along the crown of the bend. Do it near the middle where the hose flexes most, not at the rigid fittings.

How does a collapsed hose show itself while driving?

Why are hoses replaced by age and not mileage?

Because rubber ages chemically whether the vehicle moves or not. Ozone, heat and ultraviolet break down the cover, and absorbed moisture attacks the inner tube. What else is replaced with the hose?

Both copper washers at every banjo, the U-clip if it is corroded or distorted, and the brake fluid in that circuit, which is being disturbed anyway. If the steel pipe nut is rounded or the pipe end is corroded, the short steel pipe section goes too — a rounded nut on a rusted pipe cannot be reused safely.

How urgent is a cracked hose?

It is the most urgent brake part there is. A pad that is thin still stops the vehicle; a hose that bursts gives no braking at that circuit at all, without warning, usually at the moment of hardest braking. A visibly cracked hose is a do-not-drive finding, not a quotation for next week.
