While the wheel is already off, check four things: the disc for thickness and scoring, the caliper slide pins for free movement, the flexible brake hose for cracks and swelling, and the brake fluid level and colour. Brake fluid should be changed every two years regardless of distance travelled.

What else should be checked when the wheel is already off?

When does the brake fluid need changing?

Typically every two years, regardless of distance. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and water lowers its boiling point — which is how a pedal goes soft during a long descent. Dark or cloudy fluid should be changed whatever the date says.

Do the caliper slide pins really matter?

Very much. A seized pin stops the caliper from centring, so one pad carries the load and wears out in a fraction of the expected life while the other barely touches the disc. If your old pads wore unevenly, the pins are the first thing to suspect — not the pads.
