When does the brake fluid need changing?

Typically every two years, regardless of distance. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, and water lowers its boiling point — which is how a pedal goes soft during a long descent. Do the caliper slide pins really matter?

Very much. A seized pin stops the caliper from centring, so one pad carries the load and wears out in a fraction of the expected life while the other barely touches the disc. When do the discs have to be replaced with the pads?

When the disc is below its minimum thickness, which is cast on the disc hub as "MIN TH" and is typically 2 to 3 mm below the new thickness — a 26 mm new disc often has a 24 mm minimum. What should be checked on the caliper itself?

That both slide pins move freely through their full travel and their rubber boots are intact, that the piston retracts smoothly and its dust seal is not split, and that the bracket contact points are free of rust scale. Is it worth replacing the flexible hoses?

On a vehicle over about eight years old, or wherever a hose is cracked, bulging or the crimp is corroded, yes.
