Brake hoses are sold by length and by the fitting at each end, and the two ends are almost never the same. One end usually carries a female thread that the steel pipe screws into, the other a banjo eye or a male thread that bolts to the caliper. Get the length right and the ends wrong and the hose is useless.

A brake pipe nut into the hose end is typically 12 to 18 Nm — much lighter than it feels it should be, and overtightening splits the flare. A banjo bolt is 25 to 40 Nm. Both are small fasteners carrying 140 bar, so use a torque wrench rather than feel; a stripped M10 hose end means a new hose.

The hose is held to the body by a U-clip through a flat on the fitting. That tab sets the angle the hose leaves the bracket, and a hose whose tab is rotated 90 degrees from the original will route wrongly and chafe on the tyre or the spring within a few thousand kilometres.
