A clutch cover has to match the flywheel it bolts to and the disc it clamps. Three things decide it: the bolt circle and bolt count, the outside diameter of the cover, and the type of release mechanism — push or pull. Two covers can look nearly identical and differ on any one of the three.

What is the difference between push and pull type?

On a push type, the release bearing pushes the diaphragm fingers inward toward the flywheel. On a pull type, the bearing clips into the fingers and pulls them outward. They are not interchangeable in either direction, and a pull-type bearing has to be engaged into the cover before the gearbox goes on.

How do you check the bolt pattern?

Count the bolt holes — commonly six, nine or twelve — and measure the bolt circle diameter across two opposite holes, centre to centre. Typical circles run 200 to 300 mm. Lay the new cover on the old one and rotate it; every hole must line up at every position before the part leaves the counter.

Do the dowel pins matter?

Yes. Most flywheels carry two or three locating dowels that set the cover exactly concentric with the crankshaft. A cover whose holes do not accept the dowels is the wrong part, no matter how well the bolt holes line up. Never file a dowel hole to make a cover fit.

Should the cover match the disc brand?

Ideally yes — the kit is engineered as a set, with the clamp load matched to the facing material and the finger height matched to the bearing travel. Mixing brands can work but leaves no one accountable if the clutch slips or judders. Sell the kit from one maker and the diagnosis stays simple.

Can a cover from a diesel model be used on a petrol one?

Only if the bolt pattern, diameter and release type all match, and even then the higher clamp load makes the pedal heavy for no benefit. The petrol engine does not produce the torque the cover was designed to hold. Fit what the vehicle specifies unless the customer has changed the engine.

Bolt count, bolt circle diameter, cover outside diameter, push or pull, and the engine code. Those five settle almost every cover in stock without the old part in hand — which matters because the cover is still on the vehicle when the customer telephones.
