A clutch cover wears in ways the customer cannot see, because it is hidden behind the gearbox. By the time the disc is thin enough to need replacing, the cover has usually done the same work and lost some of its clamp load. This article covers what to look for and why the cover is not the place to economise.
A face-on illustration of a clutch cover diaphragm assembly: the outer cover rim, a dashed ring marking the pressure plate friction face, a central hub, ten diaphragm spring fingers radiating from the hub to the rim, three tangential drive-strap tabs, and mounting bolt holes around the flange. Four numbered points: (1) the diaphragm fingers, which grind grooved where the release bearing runs and are condemned once wear exceeds 0.3 mm or a straight edge shows uneven heights; (2) the friction face, where heat cracks you can catch a fingernail in mean the plate will crack through and must be replaced, not skimmed; (3) the drive straps, which when fatigued let the pressure plate grab in steps, causing judder; (4) the mounting bolt holes. An amber box explains that clamp load fades invisibly with heat: repeated cycles above about 300°C relax the diaphragm spring's temper, so a cover that started at 6,000 N can drop below 4,500 N after years of driving, and skimming the plate lowers the diaphragm's working height and reduces clamp load further, so a skimmed cover often slips sooner than the one it replaced.

Heat. Repeated cycles above about 300 degrees relax the temper of the diaphragm spring, and a cover that started at 6,000 N can drop below 4,500 N after years of city driving. The change is gradual and invisible, and it is why a new disc against an old cover often slips within a few thousand kilometres.

It is done, but it lowers the working height of the diaphragm and reduces clamp load further, so a skimmed cover often slips sooner than the one it replaced. Given that the gearbox has to come out either way, the cost of a new cover against a second full strip-down makes the decision straightforward.

The same as the disc it works with — sixty to one hundred and twenty thousand kilometres in mixed use. Because the two wear together and the labour is identical, they are replaced together as a matter of course. A cover that fails alone is usually the result of overheating or a misaligned release bearing.
Why does the clutch judder when pulling away?
Judder is a clamp load that arrives unevenly, and the cover is only one of the suspects. Inside the cover, fatigued drive straps or a diaphragm that has gone soft on one side let the pressure plate grab in steps. Outside it, the commonest cause here is oil on the friction face from a leaking rear main seal or gearbox input shaft seal — a teaspoon is enough. A flywheel face that has been skimmed unevenly or left with hard spots does the same, and so do collapsed engine or gearbox mounts, which let the whole driveline rock instead of holding it. Sort them by behaviour: judder that eases as everything warms up usually points to oil contamination, judder that is identical cold and hot points to the mechanical parts, and judder that is worse in reverse than in first points to the mounts.
