(CV Joints · Basics)
Which joints a vehicle carries follows directly from how it drives its wheels. A front wheel drive car has four CV joints, two per side. A rear wheel drive truck with a live axle has no CV joints at all, only universal joints in the propeller shaft. A four wheel drive has both, and an independent rear suspension adds CV joints at the back as well.
Why does a live rear axle need no CV joints?
Because the axle shafts and the differential move up and down together as one rigid unit, so the angle between the shaft and the wheel never changes. The only angle in the system is at the propeller shaft, where two universal joints handle it. That simplicity is why live axles are still used on working trucks.

Does a part-time four wheel drive wear its front CV joints when in two wheel drive?
They still turn, because the wheels drive them even when no torque is applied, but they wear far more slowly since they are not carrying load. The larger risk in two wheel drive is that the joints sit unused and the grease settles, so a four wheel drive vehicle that is never engaged should still be run in four wheel drive occasionally on a loose surface.

Which joint fails first on most vehicles?
The outer joint on the driver's side, on most vehicles and in most conditions. It works at the largest angles, it carries the most load pulling away, and its boot sits closest to the road spray and to the kerb. When budgeting a repair, assume the outer joints go first and the inner ones follow much later.
