Testing a CV Joint With the Shaft Off the Vehicle

Once a shaft is out, a joint can be judged properly in a way that is impossible on the vehicle. Three checks cover it: how much the joint rotates back and forth before it takes up drive, whether it moves smoothly through its full angle, and what the grease looks and feels like when it is wiped between two fingers.

How much rotational play is acceptable?

Hold the shaft and twist the joint housing back and forth. A healthy outer joint has barely perceptible movement, a few degrees at most. If you can feel a definite free arc before it takes up, the ball tracks are worn and that is the clicking you hear on lock. An inner tripod has slightly more by design but should still feel smooth.

What does the grease tell me?

A great deal. Fresh CV grease is smooth and uniform. Grit shows as a gritty feel between the fingers and dulls the shine. Water shows as a grey or milky colour and a curdled texture. Metal shows as a faint sparkle in the light. Any of the three means the joint is opened and washed out completely rather than topped up.

Can a joint that feels rough be saved by cleaning and regreasing?

Only if the roughness is grit, not damage. Wash it out in solvent, dry it and turn it again through its full angle. If it is now smooth, it was contamination and a new boot plus fresh grease will give it a second life. If it is still notchy, the tracks are pitted and cleaning cannot restore a hardened surface.
