Beyond the rubber, a seal is chosen by how many lips it has and what its outer face is made of. A single lip is enough inside a clean housing. A double lip is needed wherever dirt can reach it. A rubber-covered outer face grips a worn bore; a plain metal outer face is used where the housing is aluminium and must not be scored.

Can I fit a double lip seal where a single lip was fitted?

Usually yes if the dimensions are identical, and it is often an improvement. The one thing to check is that the dust lip has somewhere to run — it needs clean shaft surface beside the main lip, and on a short shaft shoulder it can end up half on and half off, which tears it. Compare the two seals side by side before fitting.

The housing bore is slightly worn. Which outer face should I choose?

A rubber-covered outer face, and use a bearing retainer compound on the bore if it is more than slightly worn. The rubber deforms into the imperfections and seals the outside path, which a plain metal case cannot do. Oil that escapes between the seal and the housing looks exactly like a failed lip and is diagnosed wrongly more often than any other seal leak.

Is a more expensive branded seal actually better?

For this particular part, usually yes, and the difference shows in the lip. A quality seal has a lip ground to a precise edge and a spring with a known load; a cheap one is moulded and trimmed. Since almost all of the cost of a crankshaft rear seal is the labour of splitting the engine from the gearbox, the part price is the wrong place to save.
