An oil seal is pressed in square using a drift or a socket that bears on the outer edge of the seal, never on the lip. The lip is smeared with clean oil before fitting, and the housing bore is cleaned first. A seal driven in crooked or hammered on its face will leak immediately.

How do I get the seal in square?

Use a driver or a socket whose outside diameter is only slightly smaller than the seal outer diameter, so the force goes into the metal outer case and not the rubber. Start the seal by hand as square as you can, then tap gently around the circumference rather than driving hard at one point.

Why does a new seal sometimes leak straight away?

The three usual reasons are the lip being cut on the keyway or splines as the shaft went through, the seal being fitted the wrong way round, or a groove already worn into the shaft. Wrapping thin tape over the keyway while the shaft passes through, and removing it afterwards, prevents the first.

How deep should the seal sit?

Normally flush with the face of the housing, unless the manual specifies a depth. The exception is a shaft with a worn groove, where the seal is deliberately set a few millimetres deeper or shallower so the lip runs on unworn metal. Never push a seal in beyond the bottom of its bore.
