Three things decide whether a seal survives its first start: it must go in square and to the right depth, the lip must pass over splines, keyways and threads without being cut, and the lip must be wet with oil before the shaft first turns. A dry lip can be destroyed in the first few seconds of running.

How deep should the seal go?

Flush with the housing face unless the manual says otherwise, or deliberately 1 to 3 mm deeper or shallower if the shaft already has a groove worn in it. Driving it in until it bottoms out is wrong on many housings, because it can block the drain hole behind the seal and leave oil trapped against the back of the lip.

What is an installation sleeve and when do I need one?

It is a thin cone of plastic or metal that goes over the end of the shaft so the lip slides over the splines or keyway without catching. Many seals come with one in the box and it is thrown away as packaging. If there is none, wrap the shaft end with thin tape or plastic film — a lip that catches on a keyway edge is cut, and the cut is invisible.

What should I put on the lip and the outer case?

Clean engine oil on the lip and on the shaft, always. On the outer case it depends: a rubber-covered case goes in dry or with a smear of oil, while a plain metal case in a worn bore benefits from a thin film of sealant on the outside only. Never put sealant anywhere near the lip.
