Three things decide whether a seal survives its first start: it must go in square and to the right depth, the lip must pass over splines, keyways and threads without being cut, and the lip must be wet with oil before the shaft first turns. How deep should the seal go?

Flush with the housing face unless the manual says otherwise, or deliberately 1 to 3 mm deeper or shallower if the shaft already has a groove worn in it. What is an installation sleeve and when do I need one?

It is a thin cone of plastic or metal that goes over the end of the shaft so the lip slides over the splines or keyway without catching. Many seals come with one in the box and it is thrown away as packaging. What should I put on the lip and the outer case?

Clean engine oil on the lip and on the shaft, always. On the outer case it depends: a rubber-covered case goes in dry or with a smear of oil, while a plain metal case in a worn bore benefits from a thin film of sealant on the outside only. How is fitting depth measured and recorded?

With a depth gauge or the depth blade of a vernier from the housing face to the outer face of the seal, before the old one is removed. Write it down. How do I drive a seal in square?

With a driver that contacts the outer case across its full diameter — a proper seal driver, a socket of the right size, or the old seal placed on top of the new one as a spacer. Never press on the rubber or on one side only. Can the seal be fitted deeper if the shaft is grooved?

Yes, and it is the standard repair. A seal that has run for years wears a groove into the shaft, and a new seal sitting at the same depth rides straight back into it and leaks. Fit the new seal two to three millimetres deeper or shallower so the lip runs on unworn metal.
