When a seal is replaced correctly and leaks again within weeks, the seal is rarely the problem. The most common cause is pressure inside the crankcase that has nowhere to go, either because the breather system is blocked or because the engine is passing more gas past the pistons than the breather was designed to handle.

How do I check for crankcase pressure without special tools?

Warm the engine, then remove the oil filler cap at idle and hold a sheet of paper loosely over the opening. A healthy engine produces a gentle puff or slight suction. If the paper is blown off firmly, or you can feel steady pressure with the dipstick removed, the crankcase is pressurised and no seal will hold for long.

What do I clean or replace in the breather system?

The breather hose, the oil separator or catch chamber it runs into, and the PCV valve if the engine has one. On a diesel that has done high mileage the hose is often half closed with a paste of oil and soot. Clean the whole path through to the inlet and check it is clear by blowing through it before refitting.

What if the breather is clear and the pressure is still there?

Then the pressure is coming past the piston rings, and the engine is telling you about its own condition rather than about the seal. A compression or cylinder leak-down test will confirm it. In that case the seal can be replaced and will leak again, and the customer should be told that before the work is quoted rather than afterwards.
