A wheel bearing carries the entire weight resting on that corner of the vehicle while letting the wheel spin freely, and it also holds the wheel square to the road. Because it does both jobs at once, a worn bearing does not only make noise — it lets the wheel tilt, which changes how the vehicle steers and how the brake pads meet the disc.

For a short distance to a workshop, usually yes. As a way of life, no. A bearing that has started to hum has already lost its smooth rolling surface, and the wear from that point accelerates. Yes, and it is common on modern hubs. Many hub assemblies carry the ABS tone ring inside the sealed unit, so as the bearing develops play the gap between the ring and the sensor changes with every rotation. The computer sees an erratic wheel speed and records a sensor fault, when the real cause is mechanical looseness.
