Piston rings are expanded just enough to slip over the piston and no more, seated in their grooves with the marked face upwards, and their gaps spaced around the piston. The piston is then compressed into the bore with a ring compressor. Blue smoke from the exhaust is the classic sign that rings are worn.

Why should a ring not be expanded more than necessary?

Cast iron rings are brittle and a ring opened wider than it needs to be will either snap or take a permanent set, so it no longer presses evenly on the cylinder wall. Use a ring expander tool rather than thumbs, and fit the oil control ring first and the top ring last so each is handled only once.

Blue smoke or white smoke — what is the difference?

Blue smoke is burning engine oil and points at rings, valve stem seals or a turbocharger. White smoke that smells sweet is burning coolant and points at a head gasket or a cracked head. Black smoke is unburnt fuel and points at fuelling rather than at the bottom end. The colour narrows the search considerably.

Can worn rings be diagnosed without stripping the engine?

Yes, with a compression test followed by a wet test. Record the dry compression, then put a small amount of oil into the cylinder and test again. If the reading rises noticeably the rings are worn, because the oil has temporarily sealed them. If it does not change, the leak is at the valves or the head gasket.
