An engine overhaul gasket kit contains every gasket and seal needed to open an engine and close it again: the cylinder head gasket, the sump gasket, the timing cover gasket, the inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets, valve stem seals, and the front and rear crankshaft oil seals. It is bought by engine code, not by vehicle.

Why buy a kit instead of individual gaskets?

Because an engine is stripped once and every joint that is opened has to be resealed. Buying individually means discovering a missing gasket with the engine in pieces, and the workshop waiting. A kit also guarantees the parts are matched to one another and to the same engine variant.

Can a head gasket ever be reused?

No. A head gasket seals by being crushed to shape between the head and the block, and once crushed it cannot do it again. This applies to composite and to multi-layer steel gaskets alike. The same is true of most one-time-use head bolts, which stretch permanently when torqued through their final angle.

Why does the head gasket have to be fitted the right way up?

Because the oil and coolant holes through the gasket are not symmetrical, and some are deliberately restricted to control how much coolant reaches each part of the head. Fitted upside down or rotated, those holes no longer line up, so a cylinder overheats or an oil gallery is blocked. Most gaskets are marked TOP or FRONT.
