Can a head gasket ever be reused?

No. A head gasket seals by being crushed to shape between the head and the block, and once crushed it cannot do it again. This applies to composite and to multi-layer steel gaskets alike. Why does the head gasket have to be fitted the right way up?

Because the oil and coolant holes through the gasket are not symmetrical, and some are deliberately restricted to control how much coolant reaches each part of the head. What is the difference between a full set and a head set?

What is commonly missing from a cheap kit?

Do multi-layer steel gaskets need sealant?

No, and using it usually causes a leak. An MLS gasket relies on a factory coating and on precise surface finish — sealant holds the layers apart and prevents the coating from doing its job. How do you check a kit is complete before the engine is stripped?

Lay the kit out on the bench and count it against the engine, not against the picture on the box. Count the valve stem seals against the number of valves the engine actually has — a sixteen valve head needs sixteen, and a kit sold for the eight valve version of the same engine will be short by half. Check that the front and rear crankshaft seals, the camshaft seals, the water pump gasket and the inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets are all there, along with the small O-rings for the oil pump and the oil cooler if the engine has one. Confirm whether the sump and timing cover are sealed with gaskets or with silicone on this engine, and if it is silicone, have the correct sealant on the shelf before starting. Do all of this before the head comes off.
