Many engines are supplied with head gaskets in more than one thickness, identified by notches, holes or a number stamped on the tab that sticks out of the joint. The correct grade depends on how far the piston crowns stand above the block face, and fitting the wrong one changes the compression ratio.

How do I tell which grade an engine needs?

Measure how far each piston stands proud of the block deck at top dead centre with a dial gauge, take the largest reading, and look that figure up in the manual grade table. On an engine that has not been rebuilt, matching the notch count on the old gasket is a reasonable second-best.

What happens if the gasket is too thick or too thin?

Too thick lowers the compression ratio, so the engine loses power and a diesel becomes harder to start. Too thin raises it and reduces the clearance between the piston and the valves, which risks contact at high engine speed. On a diesel the grade also affects injection timing behaviour, so it is not a free choice.

Does the block or the head need skimming first?

Check both faces with a straight edge and a feeler gauge before ordering anything. A warped face will not seal on any gasket, however good. If either face is skimmed, remeasure the piston protrusion afterwards, because skimming changes it and may change the gasket grade you need.
