(Engine Bearings · Basics)
Engine bearings are thin curved shells that sit between the crankshaft and the block, and between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. The crankshaft never actually touches them: it floats on a film of pressurised oil a few hundredths of a millimetre thick. The shells are deliberately softer than the crankshaft.
The left of the drawing above shows one half shell seen from the end. The small square at the edge is the locating tab, which drops into a notch in the housing so the shell cannot rotate. The blue arrow marks the wall thickness, which is the dimension that changes between standard and undersize shells.
An engine bearing half shell drawn as a curved band, seen from the end, with a small locating tab at the top and a crankshaft journal shown inside it, surrounded by a dashed circle representing the thin oil film it floats on. Two numbered points: (1) the locating tab, which drops into a notch in the housing so the shell cannot rotate; (2) the wall thickness, marked with an arrow at the open end of the shell — the dimension that changes between standard and undersize shells. A red box explains why the shell is deliberately softer than the crankshaft: any hard particle carried in the oil embeds itself in the soft bearing surface rather than scoring the crankshaft, making the shell the sacrificial, cheaply replaceable part.
Why is a bearing shell softer than the crankshaft?
So that any hard particle carried in the oil embeds itself in the soft bearing surface rather than scoring the crankshaft. A crankshaft is expensive and hard to replace, while a set of shells is cheap. The bearing is designed as the sacrificial part, which is also why bearing condition tells you about oil cleanliness.
What is the difference between a main bearing and a big end bearing?
Main bearings hold the crankshaft in the cylinder block and are usually wider. Big end bearings sit between the connecting rod and the crankpin and are narrower. A full set contains both, and the two are not interchangeable even on the same engine. One main bearing is usually a thrust bearing with flanges on its sides.
What does a worn engine bearing sound like?
A worn big end bearing gives a deep knock that is loudest under load and often quietens slightly when that cylinder is cut. A worn main bearing gives a heavier, lower rumble that rises with engine speed. Both are usually accompanied by low oil pressure, particularly when the engine is hot and idling.
What is the bearing shell actually made of?
A steel backing for strength, an intermediate layer usually of aluminium-tin or copper-lead alloy, and on many shells a very thin soft overlay a few microns thick. The soft layers are there to embed dirt and to conform to slight misalignment — they are sacrificial by design, which is why a bearing wears rather than the crankshaft.
How thick is the oil film the bearing runs on?
Between about 2 and 10 micrometres at normal running — thinner than a human hair by a factor of ten. The shaft is not touching the bearing at all when everything is right; it is floating on pressurised oil. Anything that breaks that film, such as low oil pressure, dilution or a particle larger than the gap, causes metal contact immediately.
Why do bearings need a clearance at all?
To let oil flow through and carry heat away as well as to allow for thermal expansion. Typical running clearance is 0.03 to 0.07 mm on a light engine. Too tight and there is no oil flow and the bearing overheats; too loose and the oil pressure falls and the shaft hammers. It is measured with plastigauge or a bore gauge, never estimated.
Why does a bearing fail before the crankshaft does?
Because it is deliberately the softer of the two and is meant to be the sacrificial part. A crankshaft is hardened steel and costs many times what a set of shells costs, so the bearing is designed to embed debris, wear and fail first. When a crankshaft is damaged as well, it means the bearing failed some time ago and the engine kept running.
