တပ်ဆင်ခြင်းနှင့် ပျက်စီးမှု
Engine bearings are fitted dry into a spotlessly clean housing with the locating tabs seated in their notches, then oiled on the running face only. The caps are torqued in the sequence and to the figure in the manual. A failed shell tells you why it failed, so never throw the old set away before looking at it.

Why must the back of the shell be dry?

The back of the shell has to make metal-to-metal contact with the housing so heat can pass out of the bearing into the block. Oil, grease or assembly lube behind the shell insulates it, the bearing runs hot, and the soft overlay melts. Oil goes on the running face that meets the crankshaft, and nowhere else.

What does a scratched bearing surface tell me?

Fine parallel scratches all the way round mean dirt was circulating in the oil, usually from a poor filter, a missed filter change or debris left in during assembly. Deep gouges in one area mean a hard particle became trapped. Either way the oil system needs cleaning before new shells are fitted.

The shell is worn on one edge only. What does that mean?

Wear concentrated at one edge means the crankshaft journal and the housing are not parallel. The usual causes are a bent connecting rod, a distorted housing bore, or a crankshaft that has been ground out of alignment. Fitting new shells without correcting that will wear them the same way within a short distance.
