A piston ring set for one piston normally contains three rings: a top compression ring, a second compression ring, and an oil control ring which is often made of three separate pieces. Together they seal combustion pressure above the piston, carry heat out into the cylinder wall, and control how much oil stays on that wall.

Why does the piston need three different rings?

Each does a different job. The top ring takes almost all the combustion pressure and most of the heat. The second ring catches what passes the first and also scrapes oil downwards. The oil control ring meters a very thin film of oil onto the cylinder wall and returns the rest through holes in the piston.

Why do the ring gaps have to be staggered?

If all three gaps line up, combustion pressure has a straight path down past the piston into the crankcase. Staggering them around the piston forces the gas to change direction at each ring, which is what makes the set seal. Follow the spacing shown in the manual, and never line a gap up with the gudgeon pin.

Which way up does a ring go?

Most compression rings have a dot, a mark or the word TOP stamped near the gap on one face, and that face goes towards the crown of the piston. Rings are not symmetrical: fitting one upside down makes it pump oil up into the combustion chamber instead of scraping it down, so the engine smokes from the first minute.
