The can diameter and the overall height decide whether a filter physically clears the parts around it. Unlike the thread and the gasket, these two do not have to match the original exactly. A filter that is taller than the original holds more media and can be used when there is clearance for it.

Why would a longer filter be an advantage?

More filter media means more surface area, so the filter holds more dirt before it starts to restrict flow and open its bypass valve. In dusty operating conditions, and on vehicles doing many short journeys, that extra capacity is useful. The filtration standard itself does not change, only how long it lasts before it is full.

What should I check before fitting a taller filter?

Check what sits below or beside the filter once it is screwed on. Steering linkage, a driveshaft, an exhaust pipe, a subframe rail or a chassis member can all be close enough to touch. There must be clear space all round so the filter cannot rub, and it must not sit against anything hot. If in doubt, use the original size.

Is a shorter filter ever acceptable?

Only as a temporary measure where clearance genuinely does not allow the correct one, and only with the same thread and gasket. A shorter filter holds less media, so it fills sooner and opens its bypass valve earlier, which means unfiltered oil reaches the engine. Fit the correct size at the next opportunity.
