The can diameter and the overall height decide whether a filter physically clears the parts around it. Unlike the thread and the gasket, these two do not have to match the original exactly. A filter that is taller than the original holds more media and can be used when there is clearance for it.

More filter media means more surface area, so the filter holds more dirt before it starts to restrict flow and open its bypass valve. What should I check before fitting a taller filter?

Check what sits below or beside the filter once it is screwed on. Steering linkage, a driveshaft, an exhaust pipe, a subframe rail or a chassis member can all be close enough to touch. There must be clear space all round so the filter cannot rub, and it must not sit against anything hot. Is a shorter filter ever acceptable?

Only as a temporary measure where clearance genuinely does not allow the correct one, and only with the same thread and gasket. A shorter filter holds less media, so it fills sooner and opens its bypass valve earlier, which means unfiltered oil reaches the engine. How much taller can a filter safely be?

Only as much as the space around it allows, and you have to check three things: clearance to the chassis rail or subframe, clearance to the exhaust or turbo pipe, and whether the sump guard still fits. Yes, in two cases. A taller can holds more oil, so the engine's oil level reads slightly low after the first start until you top up — check the dipstick after running, not before. Does a bigger filter let me extend the oil change interval?

Does a taller filter hold enough extra oil to matter?
