The sealing gasket on a spin-on oil filter is described by three figures: outer diameter, inner diameter and thickness, written for example as 62 by 52 by 5 millimetres. This ring is the only thing holding full engine oil pressure back, so it must sit squarely on the machined face of the engine.

What happens if the gasket diameter is wrong?

If the outer diameter is too large the gasket overhangs the machined ring and has nothing solid behind part of its circumference, so it distorts and blows out under pressure. If the inner diameter is too large the gasket can sit over the oil return ports and let pressurised oil escape. Either way the engine loses oil quickly once running.

Why must the old gasket be removed from the engine?

When a filter is unscrewed the gasket sometimes stays stuck to the engine face. Fitting a new filter on top of it puts two gaskets in series, which cannot seal and will leak heavily as soon as oil pressure builds. Always run a finger around the machined face after removing the old filter and confirm it is bare metal.

Should the gasket be oiled before fitting?

Yes. Smear a thin film of clean engine oil around the rubber before fitting. A dry gasket grips the machined face as the filter is turned and twists instead of sliding, which leaves it pinched and leaking. An oiled gasket also releases cleanly at the next change instead of tearing and staying behind.

How tight should a spin-on filter be?

Turn it by hand until the gasket first touches the engine face, then tighten a further three quarters of a turn to one full turn by hand. Most filters print this instruction on the can. Do not use a filter wrench to tighten, only to remove. An over-tightened filter crushes the gasket and is very difficult to remove next time.
