Can I change the filter without changing the oil?

There is little point. Changing the filter drains only the small amount of oil held inside it, so the dirty oil in the sump stays where it is and immediately contaminates the new filter. The two are changed together because each protects the other. Under any of the severe-service conditions the makers list: constant short trips where the oil never reaches 90 degrees Celsius, heavy loads or towing, idling for long periods, dusty or unsealed roads, and stop-start city work. No, and this is the most common false economy in servicing. The filter fills with contaminant that the oil carried, and better oil does not mean less contaminant — a good oil actually holds more soot in suspension and delivers more of it to the filter. No. Synthetic oil resists breaking down for longer, but the filter fills with solid particles at the same rate regardless of what the oil is made from. The element has a fixed dirt capacity.
