A spin-on oil filter fits or does not fit on four measurements: the centre thread size, the sealing gasket diameter, the can outer diameter and the overall height. The thread and the gasket must match exactly. The diameter and height only need to leave enough clearance around the filter.

The drawing above shows all four measurements on one filter. The red ring is the sealing gasket, which sits against the flat machined face on the engine. The centre hole carries the thread that screws onto the engine stud. H is measured from the gasket face to the closed end of the can, and D is the widest part of the can body.

Which of the four is the most important?

The thread, because a wrong thread cannot be corrected. A filter with the wrong thread will either not start at all or will start crookedly and damage the thread on the engine, which is an expensive repair. Check the thread first, then the gasket, and only then worry about whether the filter physically clears the surrounding parts.

Can I measure these myself at the counter?

Yes, with a vernier caliper and a thread gauge. Measure the gasket outer and inner diameter across the ring, measure the can at its widest point, and measure the height from the gasket face to the top. The thread needs a thread gauge or a known bolt, because judging a thread pitch by eye is unreliable.

Two filters have the same thread but different gaskets. Will either fit?

No. The gasket must sit fully on the flat machined ring on the engine block. A gasket that is too small in diameter can sit partly over the oil ports and will not seal, and a gasket that is too large can overhang the machined face and blow out under pressure. Matching thread alone is not enough.
