Can I measure these myself at the counter?

Two filters have the same thread but different gaskets. Will either fit?

In what order should the four measurements be checked?

Which of the four is measured wrong most often?

The gasket outside diameter, because people measure the rubber where it sits proud rather than across its true outer edge, and a 2 mm error is enough to pick the wrong part. Can a filter be right on all four and still be wrong?

Yes, in two ways. The bypass valve setting may not match what the engine needs, which matters on a diesel with a high oil pressure. And the filter may lack an anti-drainback valve on an engine that is mounted so the filter drains overnight, which gives a second or two of dry running at every start. What happens if the gasket diameter is 2 mm out?

The seal sits partly off the machined face on the block, and at 3 to 5 bar of hot oil pressure it blows out — usually within minutes of starting, emptying the sump onto the road. Does filter height matter if everything else fits?

Yes, in both directions. A filter too tall fouls the subframe or the drive shaft and gets crushed; a filter too short holds less oil and less filter area, so the bypass opens sooner between services.
