The 3/4 is the nominal thread diameter in inches, so about 19 millimetres. The 16 is the number of thread turns in one inch of length. UNF stands for Unified National Fine, which is the thread standard. In 13/16-16 UNF the diameter is larger at about 20.6 millimetres while the pitch stays the same.

The M means metric. The 20 is the thread outer diameter in millimetres. The 1.5 is the pitch, meaning the distance from one thread crest to the next, also in millimetres. M20 x 1.5 and M18 x 1.5 share the same pitch but differ by two millimetres in diameter, which is enough that neither will start on the other mount.

Can a UNF filter be fitted to a metric mount?

No. The two standards use different thread angles and pitches, and although a UNF filter may appear to start on a metric stud, it is cutting a new thread as it goes. Stop immediately if a filter needs more than light hand force in the first turn. The mount thread on an engine is expensive to repair.

How do I identify the thread without a gauge?

Compare the old filter directly against the new one by holding the two threaded openings together. If the crests line up along the whole depth they are the same thread. Bring the old filter to the counter where possible. Guessing from the vehicle model is unsafe because the same model is often sold with more than one engine.
