Narrow V-belts are a separate family used mainly on machinery rather than vehicles. They are taller in relation to their width than classical belts, which lets a narrower belt carry the same load. The four sizes are SPZ at about 9.7 by 8 millimetres, SPA at 12.7 by 10, SPB at 16.3 by 13 and SPC at 22 by 18.

Can a narrow belt replace a classical belt?

Not in the same pulley. A narrow belt is deeper than a classical belt of similar top width, so it sits too low in a classical groove and touches the bottom, losing all its side grip. SPZ and A look similar in a parts bin but are not interchangeable. Match the belt to the pulley, not to the belt it replaces.

On air compressors, rice mills, generator sets, pumps, saw benches and other stationary machinery where the drive was designed for compact pulleys and high power. They are almost never used on vehicle engines, so a customer arriving with an SPB belt is usually asking about workshop or agricultural equipment.

How do I tell a narrow belt from a classical belt by eye?

Look at the proportion from the end. A classical belt is noticeably wider than it is tall, roughly in the ratio of three to two. A narrow belt is almost square, or in the case of SPC taller than it is wide at the base. If you are unsure, measure both the width and the height rather than relying on width alone.
