What a V-Belt Is and How the Wedge Grip Works

(V-Belts and Fan Belts · Basics)

A V-belt is a belt with a wedge-shaped cross-section that sits in a matching V-shaped groove in the pulley. It grips on its two sloping sides, not on its bottom. As the belt is pulled tighter the wedge action multiplies that grip, which is why a V-belt can carry a useful load without being strained drum-tight.V-Belt

The left of the drawing above shows the single most important point about a V-belt: there must always be a gap between the bottom of the belt and the bottom of the pulley groove. The belt carries its load on the two 40 degree side faces. If the belt sinks far enough to touch the bottom of the groove, the side grip is lost and the belt simply spins.

V-belt cross-section seated in a pulley groove showing the wedge angle, side-face grip, and the critical gap at the bottom of the groove

A cross-section of a V-belt seated in a pulley groove, drawn as a dark wedge shape fitting into a V-shaped notch in the pulley. The 40 degree included angle of the wedge is marked, and a critical gap between the bottom tip of the belt and the bottom of the groove is highlighted in red. Three numbered points: (1) the side faces carry the load — grip comes from the two sloping faces, not the bottom of the belt; (2) the wedge effect — tension pushes the belt down into the narrowing groove, and the sloping walls squeeze the sides far harder than the tension alone would; (3) a belt that has worn or stretched enough to bottom out in the groove loses its side grip entirely and simply spins, even under tension. A grey box contrasts a flat belt, which grips only through the friction of tension pressing it onto the pulley face, with a V-belt, whose wedge action multiplies that grip so it can carry a useful load without being strained drum-tight.

Why does a V-belt grip better than a flat belt?

A flat belt grips only by the friction of the tension pressing it onto the pulley face. A V-belt adds the wedge effect: the same tension pushes the belt down into a narrowing groove, and the sloping walls squeeze the sides much harder than the tension alone would. In practice a V-belt carries several times the load of a flat belt of the same width.

Where are V-belts still used instead of a V-ribbed belt?

On older vehicles the fan, water pump, alternator and power steering pump are each driven by their own V-belt. V-belts remain standard on agricultural machinery, generators, water pumps, compressors and workshop equipment, where a simple belt that can be changed with basic tools is an advantage. They are also common on light commercial vehicles in service here.

What is inside a V-belt?

A layer of cords, usually polyester, runs the full length near the top of the belt and carries the pulling load. Around it is a rubber compound that forms the wedge shape, and the whole belt is usually wrapped in a fabric cover that takes the rubbing against the pulley walls. A raw-edge belt has no fabric on the sides, which improves grip and flexibility.

How much does the wedge shape actually multiply the grip?

By roughly three times compared with a flat belt at the same tension, because the belt is squeezed between two angled walls rather than pressed onto one flat surface. The included angle is usually 38 to 40 degrees. That multiplication is why a V-belt can drive an alternator at a tension the alternator bearing can survive.

Should the belt touch the bottom of the pulley groove?

Never. A V-belt must ride on its two side faces and there should be clearance underneath — commonly 1 to 3 mm. A belt sitting on the bottom of the groove has lost its wedge action entirely and will slip no matter how tight it is. That is the clearest sign that either the belt or the pulley is worn out.

Where are V-belts still used on modern vehicles?

On older engines generally, and on trucks, buses, tractors and generator sets where a simple, cheap, easily replaced belt matters more than compactness. Many commercial vehicles run two or three separate V-belts so a single failure does not stop everything, which is an advantage a serpentine layout does not have.

Why must matched sets be used on multi-belt drives?

Because two belts of even slightly different length share the load unequally — the shorter one carries most of it and fails early, then the second follows. Matched sets are manufactured and measured together to a tight length tolerance. Never replace one belt of a pair; replace both, from the same set.
