V-belts come in two constructions. A wrapped belt has fabric covering all four sides and is tough and forgiving. A raw-edge belt has the rubber sides exposed, which grips better and bends more easily. Many raw-edge belts also have notches cut across the underside, which lets them run on small pulleys without cracking.

What are the notches on the underside for?

They let the belt bend around a small pulley without the rubber on the inside being crushed. A solid belt forced around a tight radius builds heat and cracks at the base of the belt. Notches also let heat escape, so a notched belt runs cooler. A notched belt is often written with an X in the code, such as AX or BX.

Can I fit a notched belt where a plain belt was fitted?

Usually yes, provided the profile and length are the same, and it often runs cooler and lasts longer. The reverse is riskier: fitting a plain belt where the manufacturer specified a notched one means the belt is being bent more tightly than it was designed for, and it will crack early at the base.

Why do two belts driving the same pulley have to be replaced as a pair?

A used belt has lengthened slightly. If only one of a pair is renewed, the new shorter belt takes almost all the load while the old one runs slack, so the new belt is overloaded and fails early. Matched pairs are sold for this reason. Always change both, and where a matched set is specified use one from the same set.
