Look at the belt from the end. A V-belt is a single wedge, roughly as deep as it is wide, sitting in one deep groove. A V-ribbed belt is wide and thin with several small ribs along its underside, running in a pulley with matching shallow grooves. Older vehicles use V-belts, newer ones use a V-ribbed belt.

Can a V-ribbed belt be fitted in place of a V-belt?

No, because the pulleys are different. A V-belt pulley has one deep 40 degree groove and a V-ribbed belt has no wedge to sit in it. Changing from one system to the other means changing every pulley in the drive as well, which is an engine redesign, not a belt swap.

Yes on an older design. One belt commonly drives the fan and water pump, a second drives the alternator, and a third drives the power steering pump or the air-conditioning compressor. Each has its own size and its own adjuster. When ordering, give the part being driven as well as the size, because the three are rarely the same belt.

Match the symptom to the driven part. A battery warning light points at the alternator belt. Overheating with a cold radiator hose points at the water pump or fan belt. Heavy steering points at the power steering belt. Air-conditioning that blows warm points at the compressor belt. Then inspect that belt and its adjuster before anything else.
