A V-belt can be described by three different lengths. The inside length is measured around the inner surface. The outside length is measured around the outer surface. The pitch length is measured where the cords sit, partway between the two. One belt therefore carries several different numbers, all correct.

How much do the three lengths differ?

The difference grows with the size of the belt because a taller belt has more material between its inner and outer surface. On an A section belt, which is 8 millimetres tall, the outside length runs roughly 30 to 35 millimetres longer than the inside length. On a B section at 11 millimetres tall the gap is larger again. This is enough to order the wrong belt.

Which length does the printed size code use?

It depends on the standard the manufacturer follows, which is why the same belt can be sold under two numbers. Japanese automotive belts are commonly marked with the inside length. Metric industrial markings such as 13A1250 normally give the pitch length in millimetres. When a catalogue lists two numbers, check which one it means before ordering.

Which length should I quote when ordering?

Quote the number exactly as it is printed on the old belt, together with the letters and any brand name, rather than converting it yourself. If the printing has gone, measure the inside length with a tape and say clearly that the figure is an inside measurement. Stating which length you measured prevents a supplier assuming the wrong standard.
