The markings along the flat back of a V-belt normally give the brand, the profile letter and a length figure, sometimes followed by a vehicle part number. A marking such as A-40 means an A profile belt with a length of 40 inches. A marking such as 13A1016 gives the top width in millimetres, the profile, and a length in millimetres.

Why are some belt lengths given in inches?

The classical V-belt sizes were standardised in inches long before metric marking became common, and the industry kept the numbering so that old catalogues stayed usable. A belt marked A-40 has an inside length of 40 inches, which is about 1016 millimetres. This is why 13A1016 and A-40 can appear on the same belt.

What if the belt carries a vehicle manufacturer part number instead?

Original equipment belts are often marked only with the vehicle maker number and no profile or length at all. Cross-reference that number in the catalogue to find the profile and length, or measure the belt directly. Do not guess from the vehicle model alone, because the same model may use different belts depending on whether air-conditioning or power steering is fitted.

Measure the top width to get the profile, then measure the inside length with a flexible tape while holding the belt in a smooth loop without stretching it. Round the length to the nearest standard size. Bring the old belt to the counter where possible, because comparing it directly against a new belt is faster and safer than any measurement.
