A timing belt tensioner holds the belt at the correct tightness so it cannot jump a tooth. There are two types. A manual tensioner is a pulley on an eccentric mount that is turned to set tension and then locked. A hydraulic tensioner uses a damper cylinder that maintains tension automatically.

The eccentric plate is rotated until the belt reaches the tension the manual specifies, then the centre bolt is tightened to the stated torque. Manufacturers give the setting either as a deflection measured at a point on the longest belt run, or as a reading from a tension gauge. Guessing by feel is the usual reason a belt jumps a tooth soon after fitting.

How do I know a hydraulic tensioner has failed?

Remove it and look for oil weeping from the body, which means the damper has lost its fluid. Press the plunger against a bench: a sound unit resists steadily and moves slowly, while a failed one collapses easily or feels spongy. Check the extended length against the figure in the manual, since a worn unit sits short.

On a high-mileage engine it is a false economy. The spring and the damper both weaken gradually and there is no simple way to measure how much life is left. The tensioner pulley bearing has also run the same distance as the belt. Since the labour is already spent, fitting the new tensioner from the kit costs only the part.
