How does a hydraulic tensioner differ?

It uses an oil-damped strut to hold a spring-loaded pulley against the belt, so it absorbs the torsional pulses from the crankshaft instead of passing them into the belt. The belt can jump a tooth on a sudden load such as a cold start or a rapid throttle lift, and it flutters on the slack side which wears the tooth faces.
