A timing belt idler pulley guides the belt and increases the wrap around the gears. Some idlers are smooth and run against the flat back of the belt, while others are toothed and run against the teeth. Each is a sealed bearing on a fixed stud, and the bearing is what wears out.

How do I check a timing belt idler?

With the belt off, spin each idler by hand. It should turn freely and silently and coast briefly before stopping. Grinding, notchiness or a dry rattle means the bearing has failed. Then rock the pulley sideways: any detectable play means the pulley tilts under load and will cut into the edge of the new belt.

What happens when a timing belt idler seizes?

The belt is dragged across a pulley that is no longer turning. Friction melts a flat area into the back of the belt and shears the teeth within seconds, so the belt fails without warning. On an interference engine this is one of the most common routes to bent valves, and it is entirely preventable by changing the idlers with the belt.

Yes, and the figure matters. Under-tightening lets the stud move and the pulley walk out of line. Over-tightening can distort the inner race of the bearing so it runs rough from the first day. Use the torque figure from the manual for that engine, and replace any bolt the manufacturer lists as single use.
