The clearest sign of a perished bushing is a knock from the suspension when braking or setting off, rather than only over bumps. A wheel alignment that will not hold, vague steering, uneven tyre wear and visible cracking in the rubber are the other common signs.

What are the warning signs?

Watch for these.

- A knock or clunk when braking and when pulling away, as well as over bumps.
- A wheel alignment that drifts back out within weeks of being set.
- Steering that feels imprecise, with the vehicle wandering on a straight road.
- Uneven tyre wear, often on the inner edge of a front tyre.
- Visible cracking, splitting or flattening in the rubber.
- In severe cases, the rubber has separated from its metal sleeve.
- A rubbery creak at low speed, particularly from stabilizer bushes.

Why is an alignment that will not hold such a strong clue?

Because an alignment is set with the vehicle at rest and the suspension unloaded. Sound bushings hold that geometry when the vehicle is driven. Perished ones let the arm move as soon as load is applied, so the real angles differ from the measured ones and drift further as the rubber degrades. If your alignment keeps needing redoing, suspect the bushings before blaming the alignment.

How is a bushing inspected?

With the vehicle raised and safely supported, a technician levers gently against the arm near the bushing with a pry bar and watches for movement between the metal sleeve and its housing. The rubber is also inspected for cracks and for the sleeve sitting off-centre, which means the rubber has collapsed on one side. Because the suspension must be unloaded, this is workshop work.
