(Suspension Bushings)Suspension Bushing
A suspension bushing is a rubber sleeve inside a metal housing that lets one suspension part pivot against another without metal touching metal. Bushings absorb vibration and small movements, and they wear by perishing rather than by breaking — the rubber hardens, cracks and loses its grip, usually with no warning noise until the wear is well advanced.
A cross-section of a suspension bushing (metal housing around a rubber sleeve) illustrating its three jobs at once: it locates the arm precisely so wheel geometry holds, it allows the few degrees of rotation the suspension needs as it travels, and it isolates road noise and vibration from the body — a solid metal pivot would do the first two perfectly but fail the third, which is why rubber is used at all. An amber box explains that bushings perish rather than simply wear: heat, ultraviolet light, oil and fuel splashes, and constant flexing age the rubber chemically, so age matters as much as distance — a low-mileage older vehicle can be in worse condition than a high-mileage newer one. A red box notes they are hard to notice because the driver adapts to the gradual decline; the first clear sign is usually a knock under braking or a wheel alignment that will not hold. Two cards: what shortens bushing life fastest — oil dripping onto the rubber (which can halve its life), heat from a nearby exhaust, overload, and tightening the pivot bolt while the suspension is hanging unloaded; and how to store spares — cool, dark and dry, away from both sunlight and electric motors, since the ozone motors give off attacks rubber just as it does on the vehicle. A closing blue box asks whether polyurethane is a better choice than rubber: it resists ozone and oil far better and will not crack and crumble, but it transmits more noise and vibration into the cabin and needs greasing at the sleeve or it squeaks — the right choice for a working vehicle, and often the wrong one for a quiet car.
What does a bushing actually do?
It does two jobs at once. It acts as a pivot, letting a control arm or stabilizer bar rotate through its small arc as the wheel moves. And it acts as a cushion, absorbing road vibration and small impacts before they reach the vehicle body. A metal pivot would do the first job but transmit every bump into the cabin; the rubber does both, which is why it is a wear item.
Why does rubber perish rather than simply wear?

Because rubber ages chemically as well as mechanically. Heat from the road and the brakes, ultraviolet light, oil and fuel splashes, and constant flexing all break down the rubber over years. It hardens, loses elasticity, then cracks. This is why bushings on a low-mileage older vehicle can be in worse condition than those on a high-mileage newer one — age matters as much as distance.
Why are worn bushings hard to notice?
Because the decline is gradual and the driver adapts to it. A bushing does not fail suddenly — it softens over years, so the vehicle becomes slightly less precise a little at a time and the change is never noticed on any single journey. The usual first clear sign is a knock under braking or a wheel alignment that will not hold, both of which appear only after the rubber has deteriorated significantly.

Cool, dark and dry, away from sunlight and away from electric motors, because the ozone they give off attacks rubber exactly as it does on the vehicle. Leave them in their bags until the day of fitting. A bushing that has sat on an open shelf in the sun for a year has already used part of its life before it is pressed in.
