What should a 12 metre bar actually weigh?

Steel weighs 7,850 kg per cubic metre, so the weight is fixed by the diameter. For a 12 m bar: 12 mm = 10.7 kg · 14 mm = 14.5 kg · 16 mm = 18.9 kg · 18 mm = 24.0 kg · 20 mm = 29.6 kg · 22 mm = 35.8 kg · 25 mm = 46.2 kg · 32 mm = 75.8 kg. These are the full-weight figures. Our listings show different weights for the same diameter. Why?

Because two different bars are sold under the same nominal size. Our 16 mm x 12 m listings run at 13.3, 14, 14.6, 16 and 18.5 kg. The 18.5 kg bar is full weight. The others are 70 to 85 per cent of full weight — lighter bar, rolled under the theoretical size. Compare the two extremes at 16 mm: a 13.3 kg bar against an 18.5 kg bar is 39 per cent more steel in the heavier one. Over a hundred bars that is more than five hundred kilos of difference. Two listings show 185 kg and 235 kg. Is that right?

No, and you should ignore those two figures. A single 16 mm bar cannot weigh 185 kg — that is nearly ten times what is possible. They are 18.5 kg and 23.5 kg with the decimal point lost, and 18.5 and 23.5 are exactly the full weights for 16 mm and 18 mm. We are correcting the listings. Does lighter bar matter on a real job?

It matters wherever the steel is carrying load. A design calls for a bar area, and a bar rolled 25 per cent light does not provide it however correct the label is. For structural concrete — columns, beams, slabs — order full-weight bar to the stated grade. What do the grades HRB400, HRB500 and ASTM A615 mean here?

They are strength standards, and they are a separate question from weight. HRB400 and HRB500 are the Chinese grades, the number being the yield strength in MPa; ASTM A615 is the American standard. Our stock carries HRB400, HRB500, HRB500/ASTM615 and some bars with no grade stated at all. How do I check a delivery is what I ordered?

Weigh a bundle and divide by the bar count. Compare against the table above, not against the name on the tag. Also measure across the plain part of a bar with a caliper — a light 16 mm bar often measures 15.2 to 15.5 mm.
