Mirrors get knocked in traffic, and in a city of narrow lanes and parked cars they get knocked often. What breaks is usually predictable — the glass, the folding mechanism, or the mounting — and only one of those three always needs a complete new assembly.

On an electrically folding mirror the gears are driven by a small motor through a clutch. Usually yes, and it is much cheaper. The glass sits on a backing plate that clips or screws onto the adjustment motor. Check two things first: whether yours is heated, which adds two terminals, and whether the plate is a clip type or a screw type. Take the broken pieces out carefully — the edges are sharp and the motor behind is easily damaged.

The mirror vibrates at speed. Is the glass loose?

Check the glass first by pressing each corner — it should be firm on all four. If it is solid, the vibration is coming from the mounting: either the three mounting bolts inside the door card are loose, or the base gasket has hardened. Not necessarily. Check the switch and the selector first — a driver-side switch that selects left and right often fails on one position only, which looks exactly like a dead mirror motor.
