Spring hardware fails quietly and then all at once. A shackle bush that has gone lets the axle move, and once the axle moves the U bolts loosen, and once they loosen the centre bolt takes a load it was never meant to carry. Checking four things under a loaded pickup takes five minutes.

What does a worn shackle bush look like?

How do you know a U bolt has loosened?

A clunk from the rear over bumps and under braking, a shiny witness mark where the spring plate has been moving on the axle seat, and rust streaks running out from under the plate. Put a torque wrench on them — a bolt that turns before reaching the figure has already lost its clamp.

What does a broken centre bolt cause?

The axle walks backwards on that side, so the vehicle crabs — the rear tracks off to one side of the front — and the tyres wear on one shoulder. It also puts the driveshaft out of line. A vehicle that has started crabbing should be checked at the spring before anything is blamed on the steering.

All four U bolts on that axle, the centre bolt, both shackle bushes on that side and their pins, and the bump stop if it is cracked or missing. The bolts and bushes together cost very little against the labour of dropping the spring, and every one of them has done the same distance.

On a leaf-sprung axle the centre bolt sets the position, so if the hardware is fitted correctly the axle returns to where it was. What must be checked is that the vehicle tracks straight and the rear tyres are not scrubbing — take it for a short drive on a flat road before handing it back.

Is a sagging spring the same problem?

No — that is the spring itself, not the hardware. A spring sags when the leaves lose their curve after years of overload, and the giveaway is ride height lower on one side and the bump stop touching with no load. New hardware will not lift a sagged spring; only re-arching or a new pack will.
