Spark plugs are bought by engine, not by vehicle. The same body shell can carry a 1.3 and a 1.8 with completely different plugs, and an imported used vehicle may carry an engine the local model never had. The engine code settles it in one step where the model name never can.

How many plugs does the customer need?

Stamped on the block near the gearbox flange, on a plate on the rocker cover, or on the vehicle identification plate. Toyota codes look like 1NZ-FE or 2AZ-FE, Nissan like HR15DE, Mitsubishi like 4G63, Hyundai and Kia like G4FC. Photograph it rather than writing it down — the digits are easy to misread.

Should the customer upgrade to iridium?

Only if the engine was designed for a fine-wire plug or the customer wants the longer interval and accepts the price. Iridium does not add power on an engine specified for nickel — it lasts three to five times longer, which suits someone who does high mileage and does not want the plugs touched again.

When must the plug not be changed?

On a hot aluminium head. The thread expands with heat and the plug can pull the thread out of the head on removal. Let the engine cool to warm at most, and blow the plug wells clean with compressed air before loosening — grit falling into an open cylinder is the other way this job goes wrong.

The engine code, the plug code in full including the suffix, the quantity, and the mileage at fitting. The suffix matters — BKR6E and BKR6E-11 are gapped differently, and a customer who telephones for the same plugs in two years needs the full code, not the first six characters.
