The Spark Plug Gap and How to Set It

The spark plug gap is the single adjustable dimension on the part, and it is measured in hundredths of a millimetre. Too small and the spark is weak and the engine runs rough at low load; too large and the coil cannot bridge it under compression, which shows as a misfire only under acceleration.

Spark plug gap cross-section, five steps to set it, and the symptom split

A spark plug tip in cross-section, with the gap between the centre electrode and the hooked ground electrode dimensioned and labelled GAP. Beside it, two spec values: 0.7 to 0.8 mm on older engines, and 0.9 to 1.1 mm on modern coil-on-plug systems with stronger ignition — always use the maker's spec, since many plugs are boxed at a generic 0.8 mm regardless of the engine they end up in. Below, five numbered steps: (1) Find the maker's spec from the handbook or an underbonnet label, never from the box. (2) Measure with a round wire gauge, not a flat feeler blade — a flat blade sits on the high spots of a worn electrode and reads smaller than the true gap. (3) Check every plug in the box, since one knocked in transit can be 0.3 mm out even when new. (4) Adjust only if clearly wrong: on a nickel plug this is fine as a temporary measure, moving the earth electrode only; on a platinum or iridium plug, do not bend it at all, since the fine precious-metal tip snaps off. (5) Know how the gap grows with wear — roughly 0.01 to 0.02 mm per 1,000 km, so a plug that started at 0.8 mm reaches about 1.2 mm by 30,000 km, and by then the coil is working far harder to bridge it, which is how worn plugs destroy ignition coils. A closing note explains the symptom split: too small a gap gives a weak spark and rough running at low load, while too large a gap means the coil cannot bridge it under compression, showing up as a misfire only under acceleration while idling perfectly.

Whatever the maker specifies, commonly 0.7 to 0.8 mm on older engines, 0.9 to 1.1 mm on modern coil-on-plug systems with stronger ignition. It is printed in the handbook and usually on a label under the bonnet. On a nickel plug, yes, as a temporary measure — the electrodes have worn to a rounded shape that sparks less willingly than a sharp new edge, so it is a way home rather than a repair. On platinum or iridium, no: bending the fine electrode breaks the precious-metal tip off.

Do plugs come with anti-seize?

Most modern plugs have a plated shell and need none, and the makers say so on the box. Adding anti-seize on a plated plug reduces friction so the same torque setting over-tightens it — if it is used at all, reduce the torque by about 20 percent. Never let it reach the electrode.

What happens if the gap is far too wide?

The coil charges to a higher and higher voltage trying to bridge it, and eventually the spark finds an easier path — through the plug insulator, down the outside of the ceramic, or back through the coil windings. The cylinder stops firing under load only, which is why a wide gap misfires on acceleration and idles perfectly.

Do iridium and platinum plugs need gapping?

Check the gap but do not adjust it unless it is clearly wrong. The fine centre electrode on an iridium or platinum plug is thin and brittle, and levering against it chips the tip or breaks the ceramic. Most come pre-gapped for the application. If an adjustment is unavoidable, move the earth electrode only, never touch the centre.
