Why is the model name not enough?

How does the customer measure at home?

Is a longer blade ever better?

No. A blade even 25 mm too long hits the A-pillar trim or the other blade at the top of the stroke, which bends the arm and eventually breaks the linkage. Does the rear wiper follow the same sizing?

The length is measured the same way, but the arm connector is usually different and often unique to the model — many rear arms use a small specific clip rather than a hook. A front blade will not fit a rear arm even at the correct length.
