Most wiper complaints are not "the wiper stopped working" — they are streaking, smearing, chattering, squealing or missing a band of glass. Each of those has a different cause, and only some of them are the blade. What causes streaking?

What causes smearing across the whole screen?

A film on the glass — road grime, exhaust soot, wax or silicone. It smears worst in the first rain after dry weather. Clean the glass with a clean cloth and alcohol or a glass cleaner, then test. What causes chattering or juddering?

The blade not flipping cleanly at the end of each stroke, because the rubber has hardened, or because the arm is twisted so the blade does not meet the glass square. Why does a band of glass stay unwiped?

The blade is lifting at that point — either the rubber has taken a permanent set from being parked in one position under the sun, the frame is bent, or the blade is the wrong type for the screen curvature. Why do wipers lift at speed?

Air flowing over the screen pushes the blade up, and above about 100 km/h it can overcome the arm spring. A conventional blade with tall yokes catches the most wind. When is it the motor and not the blade?

When the wipers move slowly, stop in the wrong place, work on one speed only, or do not park. Those are electrical or linkage faults. Does the glass need cleaning before a new blade goes on?

Yes, and skipping it is why some new blades smear from the first wipe. Road film, wax and tree sap sit on the glass as a thin layer the old blade had worn a channel through; a new edge rides on that layer instead of the glass.
