Two numbers sell a wiper blade: its length and its connector. Length is quoted in inches or millimetres, and the driver and passenger sides are usually different. The connector is the clip that joins blade to arm, and there are about a dozen in common use — a blade of the right length with the wrong connector simply will not attach.

How do you measure a wiper blade?

Along the rubber, from tip to tip, not including the arm. Common lengths run 350, 400, 450, 480, 500, 530, 550, 600, 650 and 700 mm, which are 14, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, 26 and 28 inches. Measure the old blade laid flat — measuring it curved on the screen reads short.

Why are the two sides different lengths?

Because the driver side sweeps the larger area and the two blades must not collide at the top of the stroke. A difference of 50 to 150 mm is normal — for example 600 mm driver and 450 mm passenger. Fitting two blades of the driver length makes them clash and bends both arms.

What is a hook connector?

The J-shaped hook at the end of the arm, by far the most common fitting, made in three widths: U-hook 9x3 mm, 9x4 mm and the larger 12 mm truck hook. The blade clips into the hook and a small tab locks it. Most blades sold at Win Store are hook type, so check the width, not just the shape.

What other connector types exist?

Push-button, common on newer Toyota and Honda, where a tab on top of the arm releases the blade; bayonet or side-pin, where a pin passes through the side of the blade; pinch-tab; and top-lock. Most aftermarket blades ship with two or three adaptors in the box, so check what is included before selling a second part.

Can a blade be cut down to length?

Only on a conventional blade where the spline can be trimmed, and only downward by 20 to 40 mm, and it is never as good as the right part. A flat blade cannot be cut at all — the spring is tensioned along its whole length and cutting it destroys the pressure distribution.
